A couple of Australian exports have developed Fanconi overseas.
Recently in a Basenji Rescue dog was diagnosed with Fanconi in Victoria and then we heard of a Basenji which had died from Fanconi in Queensland. This is very sad news as prior to this there were no reported cases in Australia. The following information supplies basic details of the disease and most importantly explains how to test a Basenji for glucose in urine which may indicate early warning of the disease.
Fanconi Syndrome is a kidney disease. It is a renal disorder caused by a defect in the proximal renal tubule. This defect causes a reduction in the reabsorption of sodium, glucose, calcium, phosphate and amino acid from the proximal tubular cells of the kidney back into the bloodstream.
This can lead to fatal disturbances in Acid balance. The acidic condition of the body can cause calcium to dissolve from the bones. There is potential for Kidney and bladder infections due to the glucose and low pH situation.
Symptoms are excessive drinking, excessive urination, muscle wasting and weight loss. Fanconi Syndrome is often mistaken for Diabetes or Cushing Syndrome so Fanconi should be suspected when there is excessive urination, normal blood sugar levels and sugar in urine. Early diagnosis is essential as chemical levels can be balanced medically to prevent further damage to organs. If left untreated the condition will deteriorate leading to eventual death.
Fanconi is believed to be genetic so research is being conducted in order to find the gene responsible so that a genetic test can be developed.
Meanwhile owners of Basenjis can check their dogs for Fanconi by regularly testing urine. This is inexpensive, easy and can be done at home. It is important to test your Basenji for Fanconi from 3 years of age. Although onset of the disease is usually between 5 and 7 years of age it has been reported as young as 3 years and as old as 11 years in Basenjis. Test your Basenji's urine once a month for glucose in their urine.
To do this purchase a product called Clinistix or similar from diabetics section of the Chemist. There are usually Reagent Strips in a container. They are used to test for Glucose in urine. When your Basenji does a morning wee catch some of the urine in a clean container. I recommend something with a handle so a ladle, saucepan, frying pan is ideal. Then dip the test area of the strip into the fresh urine.
Remove immediately. Tap edge of test strip against container to remove excess urine. If you get positive results for the presence of glucose contact your vet. It is important to give your vet information from the links below so that a positive diagnosis can be made. A positive test strip does not necessarily mean your Basenji has Fanconi but can be an early indicator to the disease. Do not delay in taking your Basenji to the vet as early diagnosis can limit damage to organs by commencing the Fanconi Protocol.
With the help of supplementation your Basenji can then lead a better quality of life. Without treatment your Basenji will decline in health rapidly. Fanconi to use this feature.Breeder Shows Dogs. The name Wuliango means "little village dog" in Zandee. Our Breeding program is focused on health, temperament, conformance and, selecting Basenjis breeding pairs who have close African gene lines.
Our foundation male Basenjis are: CH. Sire: Am CH. PRA and Fanconi tested as clear. The Basenji is square-proportioned and high on leg. This breed is far more slightly built and longer legged than most other primitive breeds, allowing a good amount of speed and the ability to perform the double-suspension gallop.
The Basenji is among the most primitive of breeds, discovered in the African Congo with Pygmy hunters. Early explorers called the dogs after the tribes that owned them or the area in which they were found, such as Zande dogs or Congo terriers. The native tribes used the dogs which often wore a large bell as pack hunters, driving game into nets. Early attempts to bring the dogs to England in the late s and early s were unsuccessful because they all succumbed to distemper.
In the s, a few dogs were successfully brought back to England and became the foundation along with subsequent imports from the Congo and Sudan of the breed outside of Africa. The early imports attracted much attention, and soon after dogs were brought to America. In the s, a surge of popularity occurred as a result of a book and movie featuring a Basenji. The s saw two important but controversial events for the Basenji in America. First, several Basenjis were brought from Africa in an attempt to widen the gene pool and combat some widespread hereditary health problems; some of these introduced the previously unrecognized brindle color into the breed.
Second, the Basenji was recognized by the American Sighthound Field Association as a sighthound and allowed to compete in lure-coursing trials. The Basenji has always been hard to categorize. This breed retains several primitive characteristics, most notably its lack of barking ability and its yearly, rather than twice yearly, estrus cycle.
Some consider Basenjis to have terrier-like mannerisms because they are feisty for a hound.
More often they are considered catlike in mannerisms: clever, inquisitive, stubborn, independent, and reserved. Their hunting roots are very evident, as they love to chase and trail. They need regular mental and physical stimulation lest it become frustrated and destructive. Basenjis may be barkless, but they are not mute. This breed gets along fairly well with other dogs, but often poorly with other Basenjis. The Basenji is an active dog that needs daily mental and physical exercise.
Their needs can be met by a long walk followed by a vigorous game or by free-running in a safe enclosed area. Coat care is minimal, consisting of only occasional brushing to remove dead hair.A Little Playtime With Basenji Zinga!

Helena made some in-trip adjustments for us that were very helpful. Hotels were fabulous with a great view in almost all of them. The travel agent was amazing.
I booked my trip with him two days before I arrived in Iceland and it was like it had been planned way in advance. He did a great job in determining my tours and was very helpful with organizing my schedule.
I had all my travel documents with custom travel booklet including my itinerary, map, and top places to visit in Iceland waiting for me at the hotel when I arrived. I absolutely loved my trip to Iceland and did not want to leave. I am so thankful for the excellent customer service Nordic Visitor provides and will definitely book with them in the future.
Iceland is expensive for us but it was worth every cent. Have already recommended Nordic Visitor to a number of fellow travellers and friends.
You should be proud of the service you offer. This was only due to time limitations after arriving from our Iceland flight. Many thanks for making our adventure to Greenland a truly memorable and treasured trip. Our experience was a very positive one.
Got your contact from an article in International Travel News written by someone we had met on a trip to Svalbard with several years earlier. We had a fantastic holiday all round and are very likely to return. The information supplied by Nordic Visitor concerning the volcanic activity was very timely and helpful too. For us the self-guided tour worked perfectly.
The snowmobiling on the glacier tour and the super jeep to Askja were outstanding. The guides were wonderful and the experience was other worldly. The river rafting tour was probably most exciting and fun tour we took and we would highly recommend.
Hilmar was an excellent travel consultant. We made a change in our original plan for the start of the trip shortly before the trip and Hilmar handled everything excellently. From start to finish, it was a very easy experience and we got from the trip exactly what we were expecting and more in most cases. Special thanks to our agent Gudrun who provided us with the package details and answered my questions prior to booking and during our trip.
Ozkan is a mountain guide in Turkey so he is very aware of the preparation needed to enable a smooth trip of the sort we experienced. We both felt the service we received was outstanding. We did not use the GPS that came with the hire car because with the quality of the maps and information provided there was no need.
All the places we stayed were very welcoming, very clean and the breakfasts, especially the bread, were often outstanding. We were also very lucky with the weather but doubtless that is beyond your control. We would just like to say thank you for your superb organisation, excellent provision of information and selection of places to stay that helped us to have an outstanding holiday.
We were very impressed with all the areas of Norway that we saw. Everything was clean, convenient and friendly. Really enjoyed the historic hotels. Easy to work with Bjarni. He made excellent choices for our hotels. Very impressed with the arrangements made - easy to follow independently.Shown little since sent into handicap company, it would be a surprise if he were good enough to figure at the business end.
That will be a huge asset given the number of front runners in the race, but whether he has the cruising speed to take advantage is a doubt. This is another step up the ladder with the ground looking softer than ideal for him. He is a dour stayer so this test is going to be perfect for him and as Nigel Twiston-Davies' charity bet, he needs each way consideration.
Connections replace cheekpieces with first time blinkers, he should have the race run to suit with a strong pace on. Fourth in the Kim Muir when hampered, he stays this trip and acts on soft ground, looks a little overpriced. He has first time blinkers fitted replacing cheekpieces and didn't run as badly as pulled up suggests in the Badger Ales Chase but needs plenty more if he is to take home this prize. All three of his wins have come right handed which is a slight concern, but he will get the strong pace to aim at here which he needs.
Whether he will go though with his effort if he gets to the front however is another thing entirely. Each week during the NFL season, theScore's Dane Belbeck will handicap every matchup and offer up a three-pack of picks. Week 9 record (includes TNF pick): 6-7-1Overall: 77-67-2In a shocking move earlier in the week, the Bills benched Tyrod Taylor in favor of Nathan Peterman following the team's horrific showing last week.
For the former Pitt standout's first start, Buffalo heads west to face the Chargers and their dominant pass-rushing duo of Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram. Philip Rivers was a full participant in practice Thursday despite remaining in concussion protocol, but all signs point to him being able to play Sunday. That should mean a comfortable win for the home team. Chargers 27, Bills 10A 10. Reid is 16-2 in his career as a head coach when coming off a bye, and that record looks good to hit 17-2 against the lowly Giants.
New York got blown out by the previously winless 49ers last week, and it appears the remaining games on the schedule will be the last under Ben McAdoo. Chiefs 30, Giants 13The Patriots look downright unbeatable of late, but the Raiders have had an extra week to prepare for the contest in Mexico City thanks to their bye. While New England has shored up its pass defense, they're still able to be picked apart in the right scheme.
Look for Derek Carr to find Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree early and often, and the Raiders to ride out of Mexico City with a massive win. Raiders 30, Patriots 28It's going to be windy and cold Sunday in Chicago and the Lions have the league's fourth-worst rushing offense. Look for a low-scoring affair in which the Bears' rushing attack will thrive. Bears 20, Lions 17A team with Blake Bortles as quarterback is favored on the road by more than a touchdown.
The Browns are bad, but this is too many points. Jaguars 24, Browns 20Thanks to the bye, the Ravens have had two weeks to prepare for a Brett Hundley-led offense. That doesn't bode well for the Packers. Ravens 24, Packers 17Taking Ryan Fitzpatrick on the road may not be sage betting advice regularly, but the Dolphins look to be a complete disaster.
Buccaneers 23, Dolphins 14Shockingly, the best game of the week is between the Jared Goff-led Rams and the Case Keenum-led Vikings. The aggressive Minnesota secondary will be a big test for Los Angeles, and the home team will make enough stops to get the win.
Vikings 27, Rams 21The Saints ran wild on the Bills last week and there's no reason to think they won't do the same against Washington.
